AJ Allmendinger was waiting for the right moment to march towards the front with his No. 47 Kroger / BUSH’S Beans Chevrolet SS when his gear shifter broke off around lap 120 at Talladega Superspeedway. Repairs to the shifter caused Allmendinger to lose a few laps and finish in 36th-place of the 196-lap event on Sunday afternoon.
“I’m not sure when it broke during that run, but I went to come down pit road and went to grab for something that was not there,” Allmendinger said. "We had this happen a couple times last year where it kind of broke off halfway or three quarters of the way down and I could at least get my hand on something and grab a gear. It was just gone. It was just hanging there. So, we tried vise-grips and it wasn’t going to work. There was legitimately nothing to grab onto. We put a second one on and that one just fell off again.”
“We had a good car all day and we were just trying to hang back to stay out of trouble and take care of it so we could make a run later in the race,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “We were just trying to make sure we had something at the end and we just got bit by a gremlin. We will look closely into what happened to the gear shifter to find out how the problem originated.”
