Race: Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500
Date/Time: Sunday, November 1st / 1:15 PM ET
Start:  Third
Finish: 11th

AJ Allmendinger led the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 from laps 460 to 478 on older tires and darkness lurking in the 500-lap event that ended with a green-white-checkered finish at Martinsville Speedway. He was able to hold off the field for 19 laps before eventual winner Jeff Gordon made the pass, who said ‘AJ was good on short runs.’ In the end, Allmendinger finished 11th after starting third.

“We qualified the No. 47 Kroger/Clorox Chevy third and we were not as good as I wanted to be in the race, but we hung tough and led some laps there near the end,” Allmendinger said. “That was kind of cool. It was nerve-racking. I’ve never led laps that late on an oval. So, I knew they were coming after me. I just didn’t want to make a mistake and give them a shot. Jeff (Gordon) raced me clean. He was awesome.
“We just didn’t have the forward drive all day that I was hoping we had,” Allmendinger continued. “We really focused on that in practice and I thought it was going to be pretty good and I just never really had it like I needed. I could run 20 laps and it would kind of go away. I just kept fighting and doing what I could do. Made a call to stay out when everybody pitted and it was probably a long shot with 40 to go to try to win the race. Honestly, if we would have had a little forward drive in the car, I might have been able to hold them off. They were just beating me too far off the corner. All and all, it was a good weekend. We’ve got to keep working on it to make it a little bit better, but we fought hard.”
“It was a great race,” JTG Daugherty Racing owner Tad Geschickter said. “AJ did a great job. We had a good car. It was a really good short track car. We did everything we could to try to deliver Kroger and Clorox and everybody a win and it was exciting.”
“It was a great weekend overall,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “We were looking forward to coming here because of how strong we ran in the spring. It is a great confidence booster, a real morale booster for the whole team and driver to be able to lead laps today and be in contention for a win. I definitely still feel strong about our short track program and we know we have room to build on it for the future.”
