Going pink: “Our car is pink this weekend for breast cancer awareness and we have Sharing Courage on our TV panel, which is a wonderful program Kroger has in place,” Allmendinger said. “You can go to www.sharingcourage.com and read stories of courage shared by Kroger associates and breast cancer survivors. It’s a great site to visit for support, awareness, research and prevention. We’re fortunate to be partnered with The Kroger Company because of all the wonderful things they do in the community. We will also be honoring one-year breast cancer survivor and Kroger associate Linda O’Connell and she’ll be at the track with her husband John on Sunday. We’ll have her put her name on my car in a special place when she gets to the track to go along with the JTG Daugherty Racing family members we’ve placed on the TV panel that have battled or are battling breast cancer. We look forward to honoring them and everyone affected.”

SCOTT Facebook Live Friday at 12:45 PM ET: “SCOTT Products and I are doing a Facebook Live chat and Kyle Rickey is hosting it," Allmendinger said. "It’s going to be 11:45 AM Central Time. I’m not going lie, it’s going to be a little scary. I’m talking scarier than the actual race. That’s nerve-racking just to say that. Nah, it’s great, I’m so fortunate to be part of a race team that has so many great sponsors. We are not sure which direction we are going to go with this chat. We can talk about racing in general. We can talk about what type of SCOTT Products Kyle Rickey has in his house. I’m going to try to find his address so we can TP his house. We might talk about his love of going to Carowinds. We can talk about how much toilet paper it would take to cover Talladega. Everybody just needs be a part of Friday at 11:45 AM Central and you can ask whatever questions you want. It’s an open forum, which is scary.”

Talladega: “All I can really say about Talladega Superspeedway is hang on,” Allmendinger said. “Yeah that’s about it I guess. I mean it’s Talladega and we all know anything can happen there. It’s a little bit different from Daytona (International Speedway) in the sense that basically at Lap 50 to Lap 75 you’ve got to start really racing. Track position is so critical there. You get three wide and it’s hard to make any moves at Daytona. At Talladega, you can lay back and know that with 25 to 30 to 40 laps to go, you can start making your moves and still have open lanes to make the move for the front if you make the right choices. I don’t know, it’s one of those races for me that I always have to feel it out. If you’ve got a really fast car that wants to get to the front, then I’ll try to get up there early and stay up there. If the car doesn’t have as much speed, I’ll try to lay back and wait for the right time to go towards the front. So, we’ll see once we get there. It’s one of those places that you know you are in for a crazy day. You just kind of hold on.”

Hang on to it: “I would say for most of the race, Talladega is a little less mentally draining than Daytona, but for the last 20 laps it’s just as stressful,” Allmendinger said “The biggest difference is that - Daytona nowadays -  seems like you’ve got to be in that pack from the first-third of the race on. You are kind of white knuckling it and trying to hang on to it. At Talladega, you can breathe a little more for at least half to three-quarters of the race and then it gets intense and it’s on.” 

Crazy weekend ahead: “Talladega is just crazy,” crew chief Randall Burnett said. “You never know what to expect. There’s going to be guys out there making moves to try to get themselves in position. It’s a transfer race for the Chase guys. So, those guys are going to be aggressive. We’ve rebuilt one of our cars and tried some new stuff with it. We are going to go down there and get prepared for a good effort and learn some stuff going into Daytona next year. We don’t get to test much. So, we are going to also use this weekend as a test session and learn some things.”

New cars in the mix: “Talladega as we all know is up in the air, a crap shoot,” Allmendinger said. “Martinsville (Speedway) I really love and we almost won the race there earlier this season. We should have brand new cars the rest of the year after Talladega. We’ll go from there and I’m looking forward to finishing the year strong.”

Starting to pay off: “It’s not a light switch for us running good at mile-and-half tracks because it’s been a lot of hard work,” Allmendinger said. "Ultimately, what’s happening is just the nature of our race team - - a lot of small teams that are trying to fight the problem of trying to continually keep up with the big race teams. At Charlotte (Motor Speedway), it was really our first brand new car we had since the beginning of the year when the cars were brand new. RCR (Richard Childress Racing) throughout the summer has come out with some new chassis. Charlotte was really our first weekend of running one. This past week at Kansas (Speedway) was kind of a hybrid where part of the chassis was new and the other part was kind of the old chassis. It was probably 80 percent of what we had the week before. It just shows a lot of hard work by our race team to get the new race cars in and get them ready to go. All their hard work is paying off. Charlotte was just awesome. We put the car on the racetrack and we were P2 in practice. We had a suspension failure happen and that started happening early in the race and ultimately was what took us out of the race. I really thought at Charlotte we had a car that could run in the top five and with the way the race played out, we would have had a chance to win the race. This past weekend we had good speed as well. We’re looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Coming together: “Randall Burnett and I, we’ve only worked together for 30 races and this is the first time he’s been a crew chief and I feel like everything is really starting to gel late in the year,” Allmendinger said. “We’re getting better race cars and we’re moving in the right direction. I feel like it’s only going to get better.”
