AJ Allmendinger was knocking on the door to the top 10 when he lost water pressure due to an issue with his radiator that ultimately expired his engine. Not long after slight contact the No. 6 car (Trevor Bayne), Allmendinger noticed at lap 69 he was losing water pressure and three laps later he was in the garage and his day was done at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Allmendinger was credited with a 38th-place finish.

“I started the race off tight, which we were afraid of getting too loose and it's something we kind of fought (tight) all weekend," Allmendinger said. "The first adjustment on the No. 47 Kroger/Kingsford Chevy under green wasn’t very good because it kind of got me tighter, but I learned some stuff at the end of the run and I thought we started making a little bit of time back. We had a good restart there on that second one and whatever the adjustments we made, we were really good there.  The No. 6 (Trevor Bayne) car was just kind of slow off Turn 4.  I was trying to time it.  He was just kind of in the way, so I just tried to time it a little bit and make the pass.  I just nicked him as I went by with my right-front.  Honestly, I didn’t think anything of it and evidently it poked a hole in the radiator when it did it.  There was barely any damage to the car. So, I’m not sure why it got the radiator so bad, but the engine lost water pressure and it blew up.  Whatever the last adjustment was on the car, it was really fast.  That was something I could really work on.  I think there are positives.  I think we can get the back of our cars really good when we focus on that.  We have got to keep working on the front of the car.  It would have been fun to see how everything played out.  I was having fun out there with the No. 47 Kroger/Kingsford Chevy.”

“We just had an unfortunate failure with what looks like, the radiator, that caused the motor to lose water pressure,” crew chief Randall Burnett said. “It caused the motor to come apart. We got a pretty late warning on that. We had good speed. Our No. 47 Kroger/Kingsford Chevy made gains all race long. We had a good stop and then AJ had a great restart and got us up to 11th. I thought we were going to be able to maintain because we had some pretty good speed. We got some track position and then had our unfortunate failure.”
