AJ Allmendinger and the JTG Daugherty Racing team finished in 23rd-place with the No. 47 Kroger/Tyson Chevrolet SS in the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway Sunday night.
“I’d like to thank Kroger and Tyson and all our partners for their support at Darlington Raceway,” Allmendinger said. “When we started the race, the track was different than I expected. We had some damage to our car, which caused us to have a problem when we made our first pit stop. The jack got caught under the car and that put us a lap to a lap and a half behind. From there, we tried to fight as hard as we could. We made the car a little better, but it was a struggle. I was just trying too hard fighting the No. 21 car (Ryan Blaney) to get a lap back. He kept chopping me and we finally made contact and the car spun out. That killed our night.
"We would also like to thank Bruce Hill and his entire crew for making the journey to Darlington Raceway for the Throwback weekend," Allmendinger continued. "They are a great group of gentleman and we had a lot of fun with them. It was a long journey for some of them and we're grateful they all took the time to come hang out with us."
“We had a long night with our No. 47 Kroger/Tyson Chevy," crew chief Randall Burnett said. "When we started the race, we were too tight and we were ready to go to work on it. When we came in for our first pit stop, we noticed we had some right-side body damage and got the jack caught up in it. We just couldn’t get the jack out from underneath the right side, it got caught up on the jack post. We lost a lap, lap and a half right off the bat on that green flag stop. It was untimely and unfortunate for us. It caused us to lose a lot of track position and we spent the rest of the night trying to get it back. Then we were racing really hard trying to put ourselves back in position where we could get the Lucky Dog. We were racing with the No. 21 and AJ was underneath him. I don’t know what happened there, but we ended up spun off of Turn 2. We had to come to pit road and ended up losing another lap instead of fighting back for the Lucky Dog. We will take our lumps here and go on to Richmond. We’ve worked really hard on our Richmond car and look to turn our luck around there.”
