After leading laps 43-44 at Talladega Superspeedway, Bobby Labonte and JTG Daugherty Racing’s goal to top their best superspeedway finish of the year ended when they had to serve two back-to-back pit road speeding penalties with the No. 47 SCOTT® Products Toyota Camry. The team’s hopes of advancing onto the lead lap diminished as most of the race stayed green with only three caution flags for 10 laps. Labonte finished 34th after starting 29th in the 188-lap event won by Jamie McMurray. Jimmie, Johnson is the current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader by four points over Matt Kenseth.
“Second gear on our setup sheet was not the same gear that was actually in the transmission in the car,” JTG Daugherty Racing competition director Bobby Hutchens said. “It’s actually what we ran here last time. They changed it, but the setup sheet for some reason did not get changed. So, the RPM’s were off on Bobby's tach (tachometer) for his green light. It wasn’t his fault. It was a clerical error for not checking it.”
“We got two pit road speeding penalties,” Labonte said. “The transmission was a different ratio than where we thought it would have been - - should have been, because it was not even close. Something wasn't right before the race, it seemed like second gear and then it was really wrong after that.”
“We beat ourselves a little bit today,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “Certainly, any other Talladega race you would have had plenty of cautions to get yourself on the lead lap and back up there in the mix. We had a good car. Things did not play out the way we had hoped.”
