After starting second and leading the majority of laps (35) at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday, AJ Allmendinger’s stellar run was derailed when another car bumped him exiting Turn 11, which bounced his No. 47 Kingsford Chevrolet SS off the retaining wall into more cars. When said and done, the major damage sustained to Allmendinger’s JTG Daugherty Racing machine ended hopes for the team's first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory. Instead, they finished in 37th-place.
Carl Edwards was the race winner, Jeff Gordon finished second, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was third, Jamie McMurray was fourth and Paul Menard rounded out the top-five.
“We led a lot of laps today – the most of anybody - and we were good enough to win the thing no doubt,” Allmendinger said. “It's just disappointing the way our day ended and to leave Sonoma with a car that's tore up. I'm proud of my guys and all the hard work they put into this weekend. It's just tough. We were hoping to bring home a win today for Kingsford and all our partners.”
“It’s unfortunate we didn’t get the finish we wanted, but they know we were definitely here this weekend and we had a car good enough to win the race,” JTG Daugherty Racing crew chief Brian Burns said. “AJ did a great job all weekend. It’s just when you are up there racing for a win like that, that kind of stuff happens. I haven’t seen the replay, but it sounds like we got into it with the 88 a little bit. We’ll regroup here and be just as strong next week.”
“We led more laps than anybody and that’s what you’ve got to do to win one as a team,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “Our day is coming.”
