Marcos Ambrose exceeded his expectations during the 2009 season driving full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for JTG Daugherty Racing owned by Jodi and Tad Geschickter and former five-time NBA All-Star Brad Daugherty. Ambrose kicked off his season garnering national attention making history as the first Australian driver to race in the world-famous Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 15. Midseason he came close to securing his first Cup victory with a runner-up finish at Watkins Glen International on the heels of his second Nationwide Series win at the road course.
It was a year to remember for the Tasmania native. Known for his strength on road courses, Ambrose proved to be increasingly versatile as the season progressed. In addition to his third-place finish at Infineon Raceway and his runner-up finish at Watkins Glen International, Ambrose’s highlights include finishing fourth at Talladega Superspeedway, 10th and third at Bristol Motor Speedway, sixth at both Pocono Raceway and Daytona International Speedway. In 35 starts, he racked up four top-five, seven top-10 and 14 top-15 finishes and finished 18th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship standings.
It wasn’t long ago the two-time V8 Supercar champion was beating the pavement looking for ways to break into NASCAR’s premiere touring division. Ambrose’s aspirations to become a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitor led him to the United States of America and on April 1, 2006 he made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in the No. 20 JTG Daugherty Racing entry following a chance meeting with Tad Geschickter.
After 22 starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Ambrose naturally advanced to the NASCAR Nationwide Series the following year. Behind the wheel of the No. 59 Kingsford Charcoal entry, he earned one pole award, one top-five, six top-10s and led 58 laps as he finished eighth in the driver points standings. He made history by becoming the first non-North American driver to finish in the top-10 of a NASCAR championship series in his rookie season.
Ambrose’s performance led to another full season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series season and once again he did not disappoint. On August 9th, 2008, during his 59th career start, Ambrose recorded his career-first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory with JTG Racing, who had recently formed a co-owner partnership with Brad Daugherty and renamed the team JTG Daugherty Racing.
On that day, Ambrose led five laps and celebrated his first win in America. In addition to his victory, Ambrose recorded three top-five, six top-10 finishes and led 44 laps en route to another top-10 (10th) finish in the driver championship standings.
Because of his rapid progression in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, the JTG-Daugherty Racing team also used 2008 as an opportunity for Ambrose to learn the ropes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. He made his Cup debut at Infineon Raceway (July 22, 2008) with Wood Brothers and competed in a total of 11 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events. In only his third start the day after his career-first Nationwide Series victory, he finished third at Watkins Glen International.
Delving into Ambrose’s past, he showed signs of interest in racing and ability at an early age. He won four Tasmanian Junior karting titles before commencing senior competition at the age of 16. Leaving Australia to chase a career with Formula One in England in 1996, he learned quickly and won regularly. Despite his success, Ambrose needed further financial backing to continue. He returned home to Australia.
The Stone Brothers Racing team and Ford signed Ambrose in 2001 to compete in the V8 Supercar Championship Series and he backed up their confidence by earning the pole for his first ever event at Albert Park and finishing eighth in the championship in his rookie season. Ambrose earned four poles in his debut season, including a pole at the biggest and most daunting race of the year at Mount Panorama, Bathurst. Ambrose started the 2002 season strong by snatching the pole position at Phillip Island before recording his debut race win in the first race. Ambrose finished the year third in the standings.
Ambrose had a great start to the 2003 season with a victory in the first race of the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. He followed this start with a third career win at Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney. After 13 rounds in the 2003 V8 Supercar Series, Ambrose was presented with the driver’s series trophy, 102 points clear of second place.
In 2004, Ambrose’s success continued. He claimed three pole positions and five round wins and went into the final round at Eastern Creek with a virtually unbeatable lead. In the end he collected his second championship in the opening Saturday night race and then went on to clean-sweep the round in record-breaking style in his Pirtek Falcon.
He started 2005 the way he ended 2004 with a clean sweep of the opening round in Adelaide. He remained in the championship lead until after round 11 at Bathurst when he was taken out of the race and settled for second in the final standings.
After earning two V8 Supercar championships, Ambrose was in search of a new opportunity this time on American soil. In August 2005, a chance meeting with Tad Geschickter at O’Reilly Raceway Park would change his life as he knew it. The relationship grew and a bond between JTG Daugherty Racing and Ambrose began. Today, Ambrose embarks upon his second full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup season with JTG Daugherty Racing behind the wheel of the No. 47 Toyota as he campaigns for a coveted spot in The Chase.
