AJ Allmendinger and the JTG Daugherty Racing team showed strength racing in and around the top five during the Hollywood Casino 400 before finishing eighth with the No. 47 Dillons/Butterfinger/Coffee-Mate Chevrolet SS at Kansas Speedway Sunday afternoon.
“It felt like the best 1.5-mile race we have put together start to finish and we had a good solid top 10 car all day long," Allmendinger said. "I made a mistake and sped on pit road and that got us behind a little bit. Then, it was just kind of tough call there at the end to pit or not pit. When you have good track position like that, you don’t know how many people are going to pit and everybody behind me came and we stayed out. I was pretty happy to hold most of them off. I felt like we had about a fifth or sixth place car and we finished eighth with it. So, it was just a solid day. We will keep doing work like this and keep building off of it. It was a good weekend overall and the guys did a great job of putting a solid weekend together.”
"Overall, we had a good weekend," crew chief Randall Burnett. "We were pretty strong. Obviously, we had a good day on Friday and we qualified in the top-10. You know, we had speed all weekend. It was all about finding the right balance and getting the car tuned up right for AJ. Our engineers did a great job of getting the right setup for him for the race. We had speed all day long. We fought a few issues during the race. We got caught speeding early on pit road in the race and we got boxed in our pit stall on one of our pit stops, which was our own fault for not paying more attention. We had a few mistakes here and there that we will learn from and correct, but other than that we recovered great. We took home a top-10 and we are going to keep going.
"Last week, we were really great at Charlotte (Motor Speedway) and had a mechanical problem that knocked us out of the race," continued Burnett. "For us to rebound back here and show the same kind of speed, qualify in the top-10, have speed all weekend and be able to bring home another top-10 finish shows what we can do here. We are going to keep working on it hard and keep working in the direction we are going and have something for them at Texas (Motor Speedway), Phoenix (International Raceway) and Homestead-Miami (Speedway) and of course we’ve got Martinsville (Speedway) coming up too. We’ve got Talladega (Superspeedway) this weekend and it’s just crazy. You never know what to expect.”
