EVENT: AAA 400 Drive for Autism
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 15th / 1 PM ET
TV/RADIO: FS1 / MRN / SiriusXM
Top-10 hopes were ruined for AJ Allmendinger and the JTG Daugherty Racing team at Lap 354 when the leader (Jimmie Johnson) had trouble accelerating coming to the green, setting off an 18-car chain reaction accident collecting the No. 47 BUSH'S Beans Chevrolet SS at Dover International Speedway Sunday afternoon. Allmendinger was running 12th at the time before his car was sandwiched, receiving significant damage and forcing him to the garage for repairs. Allmendinger completed 391 of 400 laps to be credited with a 23rd-place finish.
“I don’t know what happened there,” Allmendinger said. "Came to green and everybody started stacking up in front of us. I tried to get on the brakes and I don’t know. I just had nowhere to go. The guys fought hard all day. We started really, really, really loose the first run and they kept making good adjustments. I thought we got the car to where it was definitely a top 15 car. Track position is so critical at Dover and we fought to get up to where we were. If we would have not been collected in that multi-car accident and if we would have had a good restart there, we were going to steal a top-10 out of it. I’m just proud of all my guys. We haven’t been very good there. The car wasn’t very good in practice and we made a couple of changes that I’m not sure was the right direction, but we did what we could there. We were going to get a decent finish, but it didn’t happen.”
“We tried to find speed all weekend and we finally got the No. 47 BUSH’S Beans Chevy competitive in the race,” crew chief Randall Burnett said. “We tried to get some track position all day long. Once we did, we got caught up in a wreck and it tore our car up pretty good. That stuff happens, but we will keep going on. It was big to be able to make repairs and get AJ back out there. We are fighting for every point we can get. We are trying to maintain and stay in the top 16 for this Chase. It was a big deal. The guys did a great job. We’re still in striking distance.”
